The middle plaque includes a composite map showing relative locations of "mines" from the 1940s and 1950s.
Nearly all of the land in the area shown (Allegheny and Westmoreland Counties,
plus much of Butler and Armstrong Counties) is identified as part of a mine.
Some "mines" were portals known by local names and the names changed with mine owner.
The text on the right interprets the composition.
